Take Five (PAUL DESMOND)

About

Written by saxophone player Paul Desmond and recorded in 1959 for Dave Brubeck’s „Time Out“ album. Programmatic title for record which contains mainly tracks in uncommon time signatures. However, „Take Five“, in 5/4 measure, does not sound strange or weird at all. You immediately grasp the groove of it. Wonderful drum solo included (not tabbed of course). By the way, this was the first million selling jazz record. A noble gesture: Upon his death, Desmond left the rights to royalties to the American Red Cross.

Original Key

Eb minor. These jazz guys are relentless.

Tuning

Regular

Tab Notes

Transposed to Am, the easiest of all keys. Some jazz purists say that the tune only sounds right in the original key. They may be right, but I just don't care.

Remember, this is a smooth jazz tune with a beautifully swinging groove, no speed contest. I saw players completely ruining the beauty of the song by sheer pace. The bridge [ B ] is quite tricky, but not too hard (I am still practicing this. Someday it will flow). In the repetition, after the C#, probably the alternative fingering (noted underneath) is easier to manage.
