A WHITER SHADE OF PALE (PROCOL HARUM)

About

Just a brillant piece of music in a true mid-sixties feeling. I know the words of this by heart, but I have no clue what this is about. Even after studying lengthy explanations on the web, this is all greek to me. But I don’t really care. This song is one of only few exceptions to the pun of my favourite musicians joke („What do keyboards and condoms have in common ? - It is nicer without“).

Original Key

C

Tuning

Dropped D

Tab Notes

Played very relaxed, while it is important to let the melody notes ring into each other wherever possible. The nice descending bassline is another main feature of the song. Technically a little challenging are the fret jumps in the intro (3rd and 5th bar). In the 3rd bar of the chorus, the little red "T" indicates that the bass note is best played with the left hand thumb.

The tabbed timing of the melody is in some parts only a rough approximation, since Gary Brooker does a lot of little timing shifts and delaying some notes in his singing.
